In Search of Short Gamma-Ray Burst Optical Counterparts with the Zwicky Transient Facility

چکیده

The Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM) triggers on-board in response to $\sim$ 40 short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) per year; however, their large localization regions have made the search for optical counterparts a challenging endeavour. We developed and executed an extensive program with wide field of view Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) camera, mounted on Palomar 48 inch Oschin telescope (P48), perform target-of-opportunity (ToO) observations 10 Fermi-GBM SGRBs during 2018 2020-2021. Bridging sky areas small telescopes order track evolution potential candidates, we look elusive SGRB afterglows kilonovae (KNe) associated these high-energy events. No counterpart has yet been found, even though more than ground based telescopes, part Global Relay Observatories Watching Transients Happen (GROWTH) network, taken efforts. candidate selection procedure follow-up strategy shown that ZTF is efficient instrument searching poorly localized SGRBs, retrieving reasonable number candidates showing promising capabilities as community approaches multi-messenger era. Based median limiting magnitude ZTF, our searches would able retrieve GW170817-like event up 200 Mpc z = 0.16 or 0.4, depending assumed underlying energy model. Future ToOs will expand horizon 0.2 0.7 respectively.

Results from GROCSE: A Real-time Search for Gamma Ray Burst Optical Counterparts

The Gamma-Ray Optical Counterpart Search Experiment (GROCSE) has searched for contemporaneous optical counterparts to gamma ray bursts (GRBs) using an automated rapidly slewing wide field of view optical telescope at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The telescope was triggered in real time by the Burst And Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) data telemetry stream as processed and distrib...

UV/Optical Emission Accompanying Gamma-ray Burst

We discuss the possible simultaneously UV/optical emission accompanying Gammaray bursts (GRBs). We show that as long as the intrinsic spectrum of GRB can extend to ∼10 GeV or higher, there is a large amount of relativistic e pairs generated due to the annihilation of the soft γ−rays with the very energetic photons, which dominates over the electrons/positrons associated with the fireball, no ma...

SEARCH FOR TeV COUNTERPARTS IN GAMMA RAY BURSTS

Based on BACODINE network notification the Whipple Observatory gamma-ray telescope has been used to search for the delayed TeV counterpart to BATSE-detected gamma-ray bursts. In the fast slew mode, any point in the sky can be reached within two minutes of the burst notification. The search strategy, necessary because of the uncertainty in burst position and limited FOV of the camera, is described.

A Search for X-ray Counterparts of Gamma-ray Bursts with the Rosat Pspc

We search for faint X-ray bursts with duration 10–300 seconds in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations with a total exposure of 1.6×107 s. We do not detect any events shorter than ∼ 100 s, i.e. those that could be related to the classic gamma-ray bursts (GRB). At the same time, we detect a number of long flares with durations of several hundred seconds. Most, but not all, of the long flares are a...

Constraints on short gamma - ray burst models with optical limits of GRB 050509 b 1

We have obtained deep optical images with the Very Large Telescope at ESO of the first well-localized short-duration gamma-ray burst, GRB 050509b. We observed in the V and R bands at epochs starting at ∼ 2 days after the GRB trigger and lasting up 2Dark Cosmology Centre, Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, Juliane Maries Vej 30, DK-2100 Copenhagen Ø, Denmark; [email protected]. 3Depa...
